If you’re ever strolling around downtown San Augustine and wondering what to do after your morning coffee, we’ve got the answer—and it’s hiding in plain sight! Just a few steps from the front door of Hardware on the Square, you’ll find one of the coolest, most creative history projects in all of East Texas: the Windows Into History exhibit.
It’s educational, it’s free, and it’s got something for everyone—especially if you’re the kind of person who enjoys strong coffee and strong community stories.
🪟 What Is Windows Into History?
Windows Into History is a local treasure right here in San Augustine. This one-of-a-kind downtown exhibit turns empty storefronts into mini-museums, showcasing stories and scenes from our region’s rich past.
Each window shows a diorama or historic scene—everything from general stores to pioneer cabins. Just scan the QR code with your phone to hear the story behind it. That code leads to a short video narrated by someone from our very own community. It’s like history told around a digital campfire—no velvet ropes or long lectures, just real stories from real people.
You can check out the project and see some of the stories online at windowsintohistory.org, but honestly, you’ve got to see it in person to feel the full magic.
☕ Start Your Day at Hardware on the Square
Before you dive into San Augustine’s past, fuel up with a cup of fresh-brewed coffee at Hardware on the Square. Yep, we’re a small-town hardware store with a full espresso bar—and we’re not shy about saying we’ve got the best coffee in San Augustine.
Craving a flavored iced latte or just need a good strong black coffee? Our crew’s ready to make it just how you like it.. Grab your drink, maybe a scone or two, and walk straight out our front door to explore the Windows Into History tour that winds around the historic square.
🛠️ A Store That Loves Its Town
At Hardware on the Square, we’re all about being part of the community. We don’t just sell nails and lawn chairs—we’re a place where folks gather, stories are shared, and San Augustine pride runs deep. That’s why we’re big fans of Windows Into History.
It’s more than a display—it’s a celebration of who we are and where we came from. And it pairs perfectly with what we stand for: local roots, hard work, and strong coffee.
