Have you ever heard of a coffee shop in a hardware store? Come on down to the San Augustine Coffee Shop at Hardware on the Square in San Augustine, Texas, for a unique coffee experience.

Do you have a favorite specialty coffee? The San Augustine Coffee Shop has many specialty coffees. Hot coffee, cold coffee, iced coffee, espresso – you name it! The friendly barista at the San Augustine Coffee Shop will fix you right up.

Here are just a few of the unique things you can experience at the San Augustine Coffee Shop.

  • A caramel macchiato consists of vanilla syrup followed by milk, foam, and espresso. It is topped off with a caramel drizzle. Some like it hot, but many like it over ice.
  • The flat white is another favorite. For those who like stronger coffee, this drink consists of espresso and steamed milk.
  • If you like more milk than coffee, a latte or a cappuccino may be the route for you. Both the latte and the cappuccino have espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. A latte has more steamed milk and less milk foam. A cappuccino has less steamed milk and more milk foam.
  • If it is just regular coffee that you prefer, the carafe is kept full throughout the day.
  • There is even an alternative for those who are lactose intolerant or those who may be on a diet – almond milk.
  • For those non-coffee drinkers, we have a delightful hot chocolate.

Coffee Shop San Augustine in a Hardware Store

You may ask, “Why would you have a coffee shop at a hardware store?” You may not know it, but Buster and Joe Consford are great coffee connoisseurs. They are always looking for a great cup of coffee.

While Joe and his wife were living in France to learn the French language, Joe’s parents came for a visit. They did some traveling to Switzerland and Germany. Of all things, Joe’s mom ended up in a Swiss hospital. In Switzerland, both German and French are spoken. This hospital was situated where more German was spoken. It was a hospital with many medical students. A whole group of them came into her room. One student who spoke English well was trying to help the doctor describe what the problem was. He said, “You have a . . . kidney pebble.” She had a kidney stone and a migraine on top of that.

Joe’s dad decided to stay overnight with her at the hospital. Joe and his wife went on to the bed and breakfast where they were staying. Buster quickly discovered that visitors were not allowed to stay overnight at that hospital, but he had no way of contacting Joe and nowhere else to go. So, he hid out in several places (in Ginger’s room, in the nurses’ lounge, in a cubicle by the mop closet) until they finally brought him a cot and “allowed” him to stay. One of his great discoveries that night was their coffee pot. As soon as he got back to America, he was on the lookout for one of those coffee pots.

The San Augustine Coffee Shop offers a wide variety of flavors, such as vanilla, white chocolate, chocolate, caramel, hazelnut, etc. A few are only seasonal such as the delicious pumpkin spice. We also have some sugar-free flavors.

The San Augustine Coffee Shop offers two sizes – 12 oz. or 16 oz. Extra flavor shots, espresso shots, and whipped cream are also available. To view our menu, go to hardwareonthesquare.com/menu.

Unique Experience at Coffee Shop San Augustine

Admiring the Coca-Cola mural on the brick wall is a unique part of ordering coffee at the Coffee Shop in San Augustine. This mural was painted in the early 1900s by Thomas Cusack. It was hidden for many years behind a pegboard and was rediscovered when preparing to put the coffee shop in.

San Augustine Coffee Shop in the hardware store also offers breakfast sandwiches and pizzas. You have your choice of a biscuit with bacon or sausage, egg, cheese and a special jalapeño sauce. If you are on the keto diet, you can have a sandwich without a biscuit. Or, you can have your sandwich on a cauliflower crust. Pizza is also an excellent choice. You can choose between a 10-inch crispy cauliflower crust or a 10-inch original crust. You can go with the traditional cheese, pepperoni, meat-lovers, Hawaiian, or sweep-the-fridge pizza, or choose your own toppings. Sweep-the-fridge (sometimes called supreme) has just a little bit of everything – pepperoni, sausage, hamburger, bacon, tomato, green pepper, onion, black olive, mushroom, jalapeños, and, of course, CHEESE!

Coffee Circle

Another fun fact about coffee and the Consfords is their family tradition of coffee circle. In the mornings before everyone started their day, the whole family, including the extended family who lived nearby, would gather in the living room for a coffee circle. They sat around, drank coffee, and talked about their day. They are still carrying on this tradition; it just takes place at the hardware store now. Drop by the hardware store for “coffee circle” any time.

Sometimes we just need to relax a little and listen to a story or two. One nice thing about living in a small town is that your neighbors are like family too. When Buster had open-heart surgery, many people just came to the hardware store to sit and wait on news of the surgery. Some even offered to run the store for Joe so that he could go to the hospital. That does not happen everywhere!
